Conservationist Grey Area

This isn’t a joke, but what’s high in protein, low in fat and grey all over? That’s right, it’s the grey squirrel.  It’s reported in today’s Telegraph that a grocery chain has been criticised for selling grey squirrel meat.

The rodent was once widely sold (and eaten!) throughout the UK, a firm favourite for pies and casseroles, but the chain has been criticised by animal welfare group Viva, accusing the store for selling the rodent purely for publicity purposes.

Viva claim that many squirrels are inhumanely killed by those who claim are ‘conservation groups’ to boost the number of red squirrels.  The store currently only sell the meat in one independent store in London… we’ve seen grey squirrel appear on controversial menus for sometime, but we will get back to serving it with chips at home anytime soon??
